Ulaa Wins Prestigious Indian Web Browser Development Challenge

Pioneering India’s Digital Sovereignty with Aatmanirbhar Bharat

Ulaa has emerged as the winner of the Indian Web Browser Development Challenge (IWBDC), a key initiative under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ campaign by the Government of India. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), CCA, and C-DAC Bangalore, the IWBDC aimed to stimulate the design and development of indigenous browsers.

This nation-wide open challenge sought to create a secure and technologically advanced browser compatible with major devices and platforms.

The IWBDC, aligned with the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision, focused on fostering innovation and self-reliance in technology. Participants were tasked with developing browsers that emphasised security, plugin interfaces, compliance with the latest technologies, and other unique requirements. After a rigorous multi-stage evaluation process, Ulaa stood out, meeting stringent standards and setting new benchmarks in the industry.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Zoho for their unwavering support and guidance throughout this journey.

Ulaa’s victory in the IWBDC challenge is a testament to the incredible potential of Indian developers and homegrown technology. At Zoho, we believe in empowering Indian innovation, and Ulaa’s achievement reflects the bright future of self-reliant, secure digital solutions.

Phases of the Open Challenge

The Open Challenge Competition was divided into three stages: Ideation, Prototype, and Productization.

Ideation: The Birth of Concepts

In the first stage, participants submitted their initial concepts. This phase was crucial for outlining the core features and overall design of the browser. The emphasis was on innovative ideas that could address the specific needs of end users while also incorporating global standards and best practices.

Prototyping: From Vision to Reality

From the multitude of entries, only 18 participants advanced to the prototype stage. Here, the focus shifted to translating ideas into functional prototypes. Participants needed to demonstrate not only the feasibility of their designs but also the integration of essential features.

Productization: Ready for Market

The final stage, productization, was the ultimate test of a browser’s readiness for market deployment. This phase involved rigorous testing and evaluation by expert panels, ensuring the browser was robust, user-friendly, and compliant with all stipulated requirements. The top 8 teams competed with each other, and ultimately Ulaa emerged victorious, winning the prestigious competition.

Rigorous Evaluation Criteria

The evaluation process for the competition was meticulous and multifaceted, involving several levels of scrutiny by expert panels. The criteria included:

  • Adherence to W3C Standards: Ensuring the browser adhered to global web standards.
  • Enhanced Security Measures: The browser needed to have its own trust-store, pre-loaded with the CCA India Root Certificate, a self-signed certificate that serves as a trust anchor for our country
  • Robust Parental Controls: Features like web filters and child-friendly browsing to provide a safe online environment for children.
  • Extensive Language Support: Seamless support for all official Indian languages to cater to the diverse linguistic demographics of the country.
  • Advanced Digital Signing: The ability to digitally sign documents within the browser using a hardware crypto token eliminating the need for thirdparty softwares.

Ulaa: The Champion Browser

Among the participants, Ulaa distinguished itself with a comprehensive suite of features and impeccable adherence to the competition's stringent requirements. It emerged as the first-prize winner, embodying the spirit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat through its innovative design and functionality. Ulaa's key features include:
